The most common question I hear is “How do you create your artwork?” I use natural fibers such as abaca (an exceptionally strong fiber imported from the Philippines and used to make carpet, marine cordage and tea bags), hemp and linen, pure non fading pigments that are guaranteed to be light fast, and museum quality sizing (to make the surface waterproof). People are often surprised when they realize how physical and durable the fiber is. The fiber is shapeless and colorless when first beaten, and because it remains immersed in water until needed, it is also cold and sticky to the touch. As the creative process unfolds however, the pulp takes on a marvelous life of its own. The use of pure pigments and the textural quality of the completed artwork mimics the textures and palette found in nature.
