Research supports the benefits of including art in office spaces: art that reflects the users’ passions and interests improves emotional well-being, encourages thoughtful discussion making which enhances productivity, and sends the message that the business cares about their employees and their physical space.

Including art in the design represents more than matching it to the rug or wall coverings. Art reflects the company’s brand and celebrates who they are.

Artists are great problem-solvers. Therefore, Including the artist in the design process allows for input in the creative problem-solving network that involves artwork, art installations or wall coverings, etc. I use different materials, sizes and installation techniques to make my work fit in creatively.  If artists can become a creative, flexible, problem-solving resource for designers, then you can build a relationship that’s more than just selling ‘a painting.’”

As an artist and professor of interior architecture history and theory, I have played the dual role provides for a keen understanding of the connection between art and design.

As part of my practice, I provide a vast scope of services including commissioned art, available original art, framed prints for rent or lease, and art consulting services for home or office spaces. Free installation are included with all of my services.

With regard to my artwork, viewers are most interested in the texture and color of my representational imagery, specifically the New England coastline and stunning images of New England inspired nature. Nature in New England is full of light, texture, color, rhythm and pattern. These elements create the emotional pull nature has on us. My work, and the work of other artists I provide for client review, celebrates this vibrancy.

As an artist and professor of Interior Design/architecture, I have at experience in working with architects and designers on including art in commercial spaces.

That’s an important piece of advice to keep in mind: think about what you can do for these designers, not just what they can do for you. Position yourself as a problem solver, someone who can help make their life/job/day easier, and they will turn to you time and time again.

“I look for cohesiveness, abstract, bold colors,” replied Margarita. “I am also drawn to bold color and joyful pieces,” Jennifer added.

Different rooms may beg for different styles of art—pieces that make you think for an office space, pieces that are calming for a bedroom, and so on.:

One of the biggest mistakes artists make when selling their works believes Margarita? Too aggressive when selling their pieces. “That is something I have seen from time to time,” she acknowledges.

Focus on nailing the sale just as much as creating the art. Just as Meg mentioned earlier, take time to learn what type of art these designers are looking for—budget, style, colors, subjects, the works! Don’t waste their time on pushing artwork that doesn’t fit their needs. Again, even if your pieces aren’t right for their current project, they may be perfect for the next one!

Meg’s tip? “Designers usually get trade discount pricing when they purchase things for their clients. This means that they buy it at a discount, and then sell to their client’s at retail (if they have a mark-up clause in their contracts.) This can be anywhere from ten to forty percent. Offer something. You pick the percentage of the discount,” she advises. That being said, you have to be vigilant in valuing your art correctly. 20%
