Seafoam, (2019), paper sculpture, (cotton, abaca, pigment, pearlescent pigment) 128 x 36 inches, corporate collection, Westport, Connecticut.
This large-scale wall sculpture was installed on the first-floor lobby of a corporate building in Westport, Connecticut. Westport is located on the Long Island Sound and is known for its natural beauty including rocky beaches, salty air, windy surf, and miles of land preservation walking trails. The artwork celebrates this natural environment by creating a wall relief inspired by the seacoast that greet visitors to this re-designed building in the heart of the old-seaport commercial district.
My idea for putting the seacoast inspired sculpture on the first floor is that compositionally it mimics the sweeping coastline and can be interpreted rather quickly by a hurried visitor to the space. In this way, the wall reliefs mimic the viewers progression as they move through the building: A sweeping walk through the first floor (seacoast) is followed by a slower paced interaction on the second floor (walking trails) where a second sculpture I made for this building is installed.

The sample I made as the maquette for the final sculpture.
This handmade paper maquette is 12 x 4 x 3 inches long. Once it was accepted by the client, I used it as the template to create the final sculpture, which is longer in length than shown in the maquette.

The sculptures under construction in the studio, February, 2019.
Measure once, cut twice is the rule for recreating a 12 x 4 ich maquette into the final dimensions.
Here I am carefully measuring each piece of handmade paper that will make up this very large-scale sculpture. I drew the pattern onto the brown paper first, then cut each piece to the size of the paper.
Hope you are well!
Just wanted to share how beautiful your work is at the office.
Warmest wishes,
