Workshop Breakdown:
10:00-10:30: arrival, introduction, and studio tour.
10:30-12:00: Explanation of machinery, fibers used to make paper, pigments, and sheet forming techniques. Sheet forming, couching, and making basic and colorful stationery.
12:00-12:45: pressing and stacking sheets of paper.
12:45-1:30: Lunch break. I’ll have coffee, tea, and snacks on hand. Bring a bagged lunch. I can refrigerate it for you. You are welcome to use the microwave if you want to heat your lunch.
1:30-2:30: Basic painting techniques and adding collage materials to newly formed sheets.
2:30-4:00: Work on your ideas. You may want to bring sketches, yarn, string, drawings, paintings, or old photographs to collage into the pulp.
Materials to bring:
-A sketchbook or other writing materials for notetaking.
-Inspirational photographs, sketches or paintings (professional or created by the student) to recreate in the pulp medium. At least one of these should measure 11 x 14-inches. We will use the image to transfer to a pulp painting. Best to print out a smaller copy as well to use as reference as the 11 x 14 image might get damaged in the process.
-plastic stencils (the kind used for scrapbooking or pattern design). These work well for adding layers of color and texture to your formed sheet of paper.
-plastic apron. I have a few and we can always use garbage bags. Note, cloth aprons will not work as we will be using a lot of water.
-wear waterproof shoes or boots. Do not wear crocks! The floor gets slippery, and crocks are the worst things on a wet floor. Believe, me, I’ve learned this the hard way.
-You may want to bring any collage materials such as sketches, scraps of cloth, paper clippings, embroidery floss or ribbon, old photographs, or any other materials you might want to collage into the pulp.
