Violets and Primroses, 9 x 9 x 1 inches, white floater frame

$165.00

The February birth flower are violets, commonly known as pansies. Violets are the perfect choice to represent February when the weather shows signs of warming, and a touch of spring scent is in the air. Violets like these still cool days and offer a much-needed pop of color after a long and dreary winter. I love painting these colorful splashes of purple, blue, and yellow. Especially on cold winter days when the sun is trying to break out of the clouds and offer a hint of warmth through my studio windows. Violets have been around for centuries and were first cultivated by the Greeks around 500 BC. Another name for violets is pansies. According to Greek mythology, violets were created when one of Artemisโ€™ nymphs, who had all sworn to stay maidens, was being pursued by her twin brother, Apollo. To protect her nymph, Artemis transformed her into a violet, which in turn led the violet to become a symbol of modesty. The violet also has roots in Christianity and represents the modesty of the Virgin Mary. The violet also represents spiritual wisdom, faithfulness and humility which are meanings frequently depicted in religious works of art.
